บึงแก่นนคร – ตำนานหนองน้ำศักดิ์สิทธิ์ของเมือง

“เมืองทุกเมืองมีหัวใจ และหัวใจของขอนแก่น…เต้นอยู่บนผืนน้ำแห่งนี้”

หากถามชาวขอนแก่นว่า สถานที่ใดคือภาพจำของเมือง หลายคนคงนึกถึงพระมหาธาตุแก่นนคร วัดหนองแวง ถนนศรีจันทร์ หรือมหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่น แต่เมื่อมองให้ลึกลงไป จะพบว่ามีสิ่งหนึ่งที่อยู่เคียงข้างเมืองแห่งนี้มาตั้งแต่ก่อนที่ตึกสูง ถนน และแสงไฟจะถือกำเนิด สถานที่นั้นคือ บึงแก่นนคร ผืนน้ำขนาดใหญ่ใจกลางเมืองที่ผู้คนรู้จักในฐานะสวนสาธารณะ สถานที่ออกกำลังกาย และแหล่งพักผ่อน แต่สำหรับคนรุ่นก่อน บึงแห่งนี้ไม่ใช่เพียงแหล่งน้ำธรรมชาติ หากเป็น “หนองน้ำศักดิ์สิทธิ์” ที่หล่อเลี้ยงชีวิต ความเชื่อ และจิตวิญญาณของเมืองขอนแก่นมานานกว่าสองศตวรรษ

จาก “บึงฉิม” สู่ “บึงแก่นนคร”

ก่อนจะถูกเรียกว่า “บึงแก่นนคร” บึงแห่งนี้มีชื่อเดิมว่า บึงฉิม หรือ บึงบอน เป็นหนองน้ำธรรมชาติขนาดใหญ่ มีพื้นที่ประมาณ 603 ไร่ ทำหน้าที่เป็นแหล่งกักเก็บน้ำตามธรรมชาติของพื้นที่ลุ่มเมืองขอนแก่นมาตั้งแต่อดีต ต่อมาภายหลังได้รับการพัฒนาและกลายเป็นแลนด์มาร์กสำคัญของจังหวัด ทั้งในด้านสิ่งแวดล้อม ประวัติศาสตร์ และวิถีชีวิตของผู้คน เมื่อเมืองขอนแก่นขยายตัว บึงแห่งนี้ไม่ได้หายไปตามความเจริญ แต่กลับกลายเป็นศูนย์กลางของเมือง เปรียบเสมือนหัวใจที่คอยหล่อเลี้ยงทั้งระบบนิเวศและผู้คน

น้ำคือชีวิต…และคือความศักดิ์สิทธิ์

ในอดีต ชุมชนอีสานแทบทุกแห่งล้วนก่อตั้งขึ้นใกล้แหล่งน้ำ น้ำคืออาหาร, น้ำคือการเพาะปลูก, น้ำคือเส้นทางคมนาคม และน้ำคือพื้นที่แห่งพิธีกรรม บึงแก่นนครจึงไม่ได้เป็นเพียงแหล่งจับปลา หากยังเป็นสถานที่ประกอบพิธีขอฝน ทำบุญ และกิจกรรมสำคัญของชุมชนมาตลอดหลายชั่วอายุคน สำหรับคนโบราณ “หนองน้ำใหญ่” มักถูกมองว่าเป็นที่สถิตของสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นพญานาค เจ้าปู่ หรือวิญญาณผู้คุ้มครองเมือง ความเชื่อเช่นนี้พบได้ทั่วไปในวัฒนธรรมลุ่มน้ำโขง ซึ่งสะท้อนความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างมนุษย์กับธรรมชาติอย่างลึกซึ้ง แม้จะไม่มีหลักฐานยืนยันว่าบึงแก่นนครมีตำนานเฉพาะเกี่ยวกับพญานาคโดยตรง แต่บรรยากาศโดยรอบกลับเต็มไปด้วยศาสนสถานและสถานที่ศักดิ์สิทธิ์ที่สะท้อนให้เห็นว่าพื้นที่แห่งนี้เป็นศูนย์รวมความศรัทธาของผู้คนมาอย่างยาวนาน

บึงที่โอบล้อมด้วยศรัทธา

เมื่อเดินรอบบึงแก่นนคร จะพบว่าสถานที่สำคัญของเมืองจำนวนมากตั้งอยู่รายรอบผืนน้ำแห่งนี้ โดดเด่นที่สุดคือ พระมหาธาตุแก่นนคร ภายใน วัดหนองแวง พระอารามหลวง พระมหาธาตุเก้าชั้นอันงดงาม ซึ่งกลายเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของจังหวัดขอนแก่น และสามารถมองเห็นทิวทัศน์ของบึงได้อย่างกว้างไกลจากยอดองค์พระธาตุ  นอกจากนี้ ยังมีวัดเก่าแก่ ศาลเจ้าจีน ศาลเจ้าปู่ และอนุสาวรีย์บุคคลสำคัญทางประวัติศาสตร์กระจายอยู่รอบบึง ราวกับผืนน้ำแห่งนี้ทำหน้าที่เชื่อมโยงศรัทธาหลากหลายวัฒนธรรมเข้าไว้ด้วยกัน

หัวใจของเมืองขอนแก่น

ในช่วงเช้า ผู้คนออกมาวิ่ง ช่วงเย็น เด็ก ๆ ปั่นจักรยาน ผู้สูงอายุนั่งให้อาหารปลา นักท่องเที่ยวถ่ายภาพพระมหาธาตุสะท้อนผิวน้ำ เทศกาลสำคัญของเมืองหลายงานก็จัดขึ้นบริเวณนี้ ภาพเหล่านี้ทำให้บึงแก่นนครไม่ใช่เพียง “สวนสาธารณะ” หากเป็นพื้นที่สาธารณะที่ทุกคนรู้สึกเป็นเจ้าของร่วมกัน เป็นสถานที่ที่ความทรงจำของหลายครอบครัวถูกบันทึกไว้ในทุกยุคทุกสมัย

ธรรมชาติที่ยังทำหน้าที่ไม่เคยเปลี่ยน แม้เมืองขอนแก่นจะพัฒนาอย่างรวดเร็ว บึงแก่นนครยังคงทำหน้าที่สำคัญในฐานะแหล่งรับน้ำตามธรรมชาติ ช่วยรักษาสมดุลของระบบนิเวศเมือง และเป็นพื้นที่สีเขียวขนาดใหญ่ที่สร้างคุณภาพชีวิตให้กับประชาชน นี่คือคุณค่าที่มองไม่เห็นจากภาพถ่าย แต่มีความสำคัญต่อการเติบโตของเมืองอย่างยั่งยืน (สารคดี)

บึงที่ไม่ได้เป็นเพียงบึง บางคนเห็นเพียงน้ำ บางคนเห็นสวนสาธารณะ แต่นักประวัติศาสตร์อาจเห็นจุดกำเนิดของชุมชน นักสิ่งแวดล้อมเห็นระบบนิเวศของเมือง นักเดินทางเห็นแลนด์มาร์กของขอนแก่น และคนขอนแก่นจำนวนมากเห็น “บ้าน” เพราะบึงแก่นนครไม่ได้เป็นเพียงแหล่งน้ำธรรมชาติ แต่เป็นพื้นที่ที่บันทึกเรื่องราวของผู้คน ความเชื่อ และการเติบโตของเมืองมาตลอดหลายชั่วอายุคน ตราบใดที่ผืนน้ำแห่งนี้ยังสะท้อนภาพพระมหาธาตุยามอาทิตย์อัสดง ตราบนั้นหัวใจของขอนแก่นก็ยังคงเต้นอยู่…ไม่ต่างจากเมื่อสองร้อยปีก่อน และนั่นอาจเป็นเหตุผลที่ทำให้ บึงแก่นนคร ไม่ใช่เพียงสถานที่ท่องเที่ยว หากเป็น “ตำนานที่ยังมีชีวิต” ของเมืองขอนแก่น

When people think of Khon Kaen, they often picture the majestic Phra Mahathat Kaen Nakhon, the bustling city center, or one of Northeastern Thailand’s most dynamic urban landscapes. Yet long before modern buildings, highways, and shopping malls transformed the city, there was a vast natural lake that quietly nurtured the land and its people. That lake is Bueng Kaen Nakhon.

Today, it is known as a beautiful public park where locals jog, cycle, relax, and watch the sunset. But beneath its tranquil surface lies a much deeper story. For generations, Bueng Kaen Nakhon has been regarded as a sacred body of water—one that has shaped the history, beliefs, and identity of Khon Kaen for more than two centuries.

From an Ancient Wetland to the City’s Landmark

Before becoming known as Bueng Kaen Nakhon, the lake was locally called Bueng Chim or Bueng Bon, a vast natural wetland covering approximately 603 rai (about 96 hectares). It served as the primary freshwater reservoir for early settlements, sustaining agriculture, fishing, and daily life long before urban development reached the area. As Khon Kaen expanded into one of Thailand’s fastest-growing regional cities, the lake remained at its center. Rather than disappearing beneath urbanization, it evolved into the city’s defining landmark—a living reminder of the landscape that gave birth to the community.

Water as Life, Water as Spirit

For the people of the Mekong Basin, water has always meant far more than survival. It represented prosperity. It symbolized fertility. It connected communities. And it served as a bridge between the human and spiritual worlds. Large natural lakes were traditionally believed to be dwelling places of guardian spirits, ancestral beings, or the mythical Naga. Walking around Bueng Kaen Nakhon reveals something remarkable: nearly every side of the lake is connected to places of worship and cultural heritage. The most iconic is Phra Mahathat Kaen Nakhon, the magnificent nine-story pagoda within Wat Nong Wang Royal Monastery. Rising gracefully above the shoreline, it has become one of Khon Kaen’s most recognizable symbols, offering breathtaking panoramic views over the lake and the city beyond. Nearby stand historic temples, Chinese shrines, local guardian spirit shrines, and monuments dedicated to important figures in the province’s history. Together, they illustrate how Bueng Kaen Nakhon has long served as a meeting place where diverse traditions, religions, and communities converge.

The Living Heart of Khon Kaen

Every morning, runners circle the lake as the first light reflects upon the water. Children ride bicycles beneath rows of trees. Families gather to feed the fish. Photographers capture the golden silhouette of Phra Mahathat mirrored on the calm surface. Throughout the year, many of Khon Kaen’s cultural festivals, public celebrations, and community events are held around the lake, making it not merely a recreational space but a shared living room for the entire city. Generations of memories have been created here—first walks, family picnics, festivals, and quiet evenings spent watching the sunset.

Nature’s Silent Contribution

Beyond its cultural importance, Bueng Kaen Nakhon continues to perform an essential ecological role. The lake functions as a natural water retention basin, helping regulate urban water systems while providing valuable green space for residents. As Khon Kaen grows into a modern regional metropolis, the preservation of Bueng Kaen Nakhon demonstrates how nature and urban development can coexist in harmony. Its true value lies not only in its beauty but also in its quiet, continuous service to the city.

More Than a Lake Some visitors see only a scenic park. Others see a peaceful lake. Historians see the birthplace of a community. Environmentalists see an irreplaceable urban ecosystem. Travelers discover one of Khon Kaen’s most iconic landmarks. But for many local people, Bueng Kaen Nakhon represents something even greater—it is home. For over two centuries, this lake has reflected not only the sky above but also the spirit of the city itself.  As long as the evening sun continues to shimmer across its waters and the silhouette of Phra Mahathat Kaen Nakhon rises over its shoreline, the heart of Khon Kaen will continue to beat. Bueng Kaen Nakhon is not simply a lake—it is the living legend of Khon Kaen.
